Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her early years Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford's first appearance on television was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. The stage was her main focus and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
